Enter your address and the booking system shows a fixed fare for the car before you book. It stays as quoted whatever the traffic does, and early starts, late landings, weekends and bank holidays cost no more.

Below are the typical drive times from Herne Bay to each London airport, the roads the trip starts on, the seafront spots that work as meeting points, and the longer journeys the same cars make: London, cruise terminals, business meetings and school or university at the start and end of term.

Areas We Cover

Collections from Herne, Beltinge, Greenhill and Broomfield

Airport and long-distance journeys start from any address in CT6. This is where each part of the area sits in relation to the town centre.

Herne Bay town centre and seafront

Central Parade, the Clock Tower, the shore end of the pier, Neptune's Arm, Mortimer Street and the station. The King's Hall stands on the Downs at East Cliff, at the east end of town.

Herne

About 1.5 miles south of the town centre, across the A299. Herne Windmill on Mill Lane is the landmark to give if your house is hard to find.

Beltinge and Hillborough

East of the town centre, on the way towards Reculver. Give the street and house number when you book.

Greenhill, Hampton and Studd Hill

West of the town centre. Off Hampton, the stub of Hampton Pier and the Hampton Inn are what is left of Hampton-on-Sea, a Victorian settlement lost to the sea by the 1920s.

Broomfield and Eddington

South of the town centre. The A291 from Herne and Broomfield runs north to meet the A299 at Herne Bay.

Reculver

About 3 miles east of the town. Reculver Towers and Roman Fort (English Heritage) is on Reculver Lane, CT6 6SS, beside Reculver Country Park.

Journey Times

Typical drive times from Herne Bay, airport by airport

The published range for each airport, from a Herne Bay address to the terminal, with the roads the trip normally takes once it leaves town on the A299 and joins the M2.

Door to terminal, by car
Typical timeUsual route after the A299
Gatwick (North or South Terminal)1h 15m – 1h 35mM2, then the M25 and M23
Heathrow (Terminals 2 to 5)1h 35m – 2h 10mM2, then the M25 west
Stansted1h 45m – 2h 15mM2, the Dartford Crossing, then the M11
Luton2h – 2h 30mM2, then the Dartford Crossing
London City1h 30m – 1h 50mM2 and A2, then the Blackwall Tunnel

Typical times, not promises: traffic changes them. Friday afternoons and the first days of the school holidays can add 30 to 45 minutes on the M25, and overnight roadworks on the M2 and M25 are common, so the pickup time you agree allows for both.

Beyond the Airport

More than the airport: long-distance, business, luxury and school travel

The same pre-booked cars and fixed fares, for the other journeys Herne Bay people make.

01

Long-distance journeys

London and other UK cities, with the fare fixed before you set off. Trips west leave on the A299 and join the M2 at Brenley Corner, the same start as an airport run, so a CT6 pickup time is easy to plan.

02

Cruise and ferry ports

The cruise terminals at Southampton and Dover. An estate takes 3–4 large cases and an MPV 4 or more, which matters when two people pack for a fortnight at sea.

03

Business transfers

Meetings in central London, early flights from London City or Heathrow, and evening returns, collected from home or from a workplace such as Altira Business Park. An executive car seats up to four.

04

Luxury and exclusive transport

An executive saloon for a special occasion or an evening in London, or a car and driver booked by the hour or by the day, starting from any CT6 address.

05

School transfers

Pupils and students between home in Herne Bay, school, college or university and the airport, at the start and end of term or for an exchange trip. Tell us the dates and the luggage when you book.

Pickup Points

Pickups on Central Parade, by the pier and the Clock Tower

Most journeys start at home. If a fixed point suits you better, these are easy to name when you book.

01

The Clock Tower, Central Parade

Built in 1836–37 of Portland stone to a design by Edwin J. Dangerfield, the gift of a wealthy London widow, and Grade II listed since 1951. The simplest seafront meeting point to name.

02

The pier

Storms in 1978–79 brought down the middle of the pier and left the pier head standing alone at sea, so a pier pickup means the shore end, on the seafront. The Herne Bay Pier Trust, a charity, has looked after the pier since 2008.

03

Neptune's Arm

The breakwater built in the 1990s as a sea defence, sheltering a small harbour for leisure boats. Name it if you will be waiting on the seafront there.

04

Herne Bay station

The Southeastern station, in use since 5 October 1863, with two platforms. A fixed point to give if you would rather meet away from home.

05

Herne Windmill, Mill Lane, CT6 7DR

A Grade I listed smock mill from the late 18th century, run by the Friends of Herne Mill. Use the postcode for a pickup by the mill in Herne.

06

Reculver Towers car park

The pay car park next to Reculver Towers and Roman Fort is a public one, not run by English Heritage. Any parking fee there can be added to the fare.

Local Knowledge

A299 or A291: how the trip starts from the south of town

Airport runs from Herne Bay head west on the A299, the Thanet Way, and join the M2 at Brenley Corner (junction 7). The A299 was made dual carriageway between 1989 and 1997, with a bypass around the town; the old road through the centre became the A2990.

From Herne and Broomfield, the A291 runs north and ends at Herne Bay, where it meets the A299. Give your street when you book and the pickup time is worked out from there, with a margin for the M2 and M25.

  • A299: the dual carriageway that bypasses the town, west to the M2
  • A2990: the old road through Herne Bay
  • A291: north from Herne and Broomfield to the A299
  • M2 junction 7, Brenley Corner: where the A299 meets the motorway

Common Questions

Questions about leaving Herne Bay for the airport

Work back from the terminal. Gatwick recommends arriving at least two hours before your flight, and the drive from Herne Bay typically takes 1h 15m to 1h 35m. For a 7am departure that puts you at the terminal by 5am, so a pickup at about 3:15am covers the slow end of the range with a little to spare for overnight roadworks. We confirm the time with you when you book.

Yes. Name the Clock Tower or the pier when you book and leave a mobile number. The pier head has stood apart at sea since the storms of 1978–79, so a pier pickup is on the seafront at the shore end.

It can on the busiest days. The festival fills the summer holidays: in 2026 it ran from 24 July to 16 August, with the carnival and fireworks among its events. If you fly on a festival day, choose your home or Herne Bay station as the pickup point rather than the seafront.

Off-peak, Herne Bay has one train an hour to London St Pancras International, taking about 80 minutes, and one an hour to London Victoria, taking about 1 hour 40 minutes. From either you change for the airport, with your luggage. The car goes from your address to the terminal in the times shown above.

Each fare is worked out for the exact pickup address, so enter your own street in the booking system rather than a town-centre one. The fixed fare it shows is the one you pay once you confirm, unless the journey itself changes.

Yes. Tolls and car parking fees on the journey can be added where they apply. The Dartford Crossing charge applies between 6am and 10pm, and the Blackwall and Silvertown tunnels charge between 06:00 and 22:00, so a crossing in the middle of the night costs nothing.
